Hazards from the air continue even after this catastrophic day –

On April 18, 2002 a 67-year-old committed suicide by flying a small plane into the Pirelli skyscraper at Milano.

On September 9, 2002,  TV station RTL in the Magazin Extra show presented how reporters in mock uniforms reached the cockpit of a passenger aircraft unnoticed with the opportunity of taking control or even stealing it.

In January of 2003 a motorised glider was stolen by an armed robber.  The pilot circled over downtown Frankfurt and threatened to crash the plane into a house.

Are such incidents in air traffic avoidable?

 Yes!

Road Hazards:

On August 24, 2003 on Autobahn 9 a bus is driven off the road, down a slope and turns over.  Five people are killed and 17 injured.

In Slovakia a bus driver forgot to set the parking brake.  The vehicle rolled out of control and crashed down an embankment.  Eleven dead and 25 injured passengers.

In northern Italy a bus ran into a tunnel wall.  Six people died.  Additional 38 persons were seriously injured.  No evidence could be found that the driver did not fall asleep.

Bus Accident near Lyon with 22 Dead

On May 17, 2003 another bus crashed near the French City of Lyon.

Outcome: 28 dead, driver included.

Investigations by the state attorney showed that the driver of the fatal bus had been driving 44 hours without break.  A typical case of exhaustion that unfortunately keeps happening.

The investigators consider this manslaughter.

Can legally specified driving and resting time be accurately and effectively controlled?

Yes!
